About

Podcasts are very interesting things that allow you to save time, have fun, learn, think, and much more. Also, they are recently very popular and trending, especially among younger.

That's why podex came as a mobile app concept: to find a better experience for listening to podcasts.

The problem space

What are the most important purposes of listening to podcasts?
What are the most important goals of presenting podcasts?
How can we create an app that best answers both questions above?

Insights

Interaction

There are some points about the podcast app that is kind of different from the others; during listening to the podcast, music, etc. people have little interaction with the interface, so It should be considered multiple features to control playlists and queue, in addition to voice commands.
Fast personalization

Sometimes people suddenly decide to listen to a podcast right when they start doing something, like driving. And they should make the right playlist at the moment. Therefore, quick access to good suggestions, which suit their interests at the moment, is very important.
Considering reasons

Reasons for listening to podcasts vary from person to person and also, from time to time for each person. So different reasons should be considered. And it should also find the best way to offer the best suggestions according to the reason.

Solutions

Triangulation
Three steps are combined to find the most suitable option. The first and second ones are to follow topics and tags, like the other apps. Then, the Suggestion based on reasons is added as the third step. So podex finds the median of the triangle which is made from your favorite topic, details about your topic, and your goals. So if you want to listen to sth that inspires you about using AR in the user experience field; by following the technology topic; AR & UX tags; and inspirational mood, you can find the best available options.
Community
Podex uses triangulation not only to make a ready playlist, and find the best search results and suggestions; but also to find people with possibly similar interests, as a suggestion to follow each other. So, in addition to the other benefits of connections, you can use their suggestions and also their playlists. Therefore, suggestions have 2 evaluation parameters; similarity of interests and being professional.
Episode segmentation
There is an option for dividing different parts of each episode, like Youtube. each episode could have its title and tags, to be found more easily in the search. And that could be beneficial for both listeners and podcasters.

Discover

First, to find the right questions and the primary answers to the questions, there was a need to know about the concept of podcasting, its history, and more importantly, the latest information and research results about podcasts, podcast listeners, and podcast apps. So, the first step was desktop research, in which I found different up-to-date research with descriptive and inferential statistics, as well as summaries of interviews. Then I read a lot of reviews about popular apps in the App Store and the play store. A combination of statistics, interviews, and reviews allowed me to gain a holistic view. But in order for all the details and connections to be seen clearly, they needed to be categorized in a useful way. So, I used card sorting to categorize the strengths and weaknesses of successful podcast apps. And 5w and h helped me to categorize all the different aspects of podcast listening. The use of these two methods clarified the relationship between the findings of different research and reviews. They also identified information gaps that were resolved with further research.

As mentioned, the results of interviews and questionnaires of other researches have been used in this project. But I have not had any survey directly. Because this is a conceptual project and its goals were to achieve quality in the shortest possible time and gain experience and improve personal skills in this field. But I already had a great experience with interviews with experts and users, questionnaires, and in-depth analysis with SPSS. And also in this area, there was a lot of updated valid information, which they were matched my research, and they made me find the answers, understand different users, and also find my empathy with them. Of course, it doesn't make sense to remove surveys from the actual product design, but it's a conceptual product.

Define
In the discovery phase, users' needs, desires, and behaviors toward listening to podcasts were found; But not completely. So, I needed to distinguish them from each other, get to know them thoroughly, see their differences, and then join them through the podcast listening journey. User persona and user journey were the best options for these. To find important parameters for distinguishing between podcast listeners, and different aspects of their personality, I categorized different spectrums related to using the podcast app, that I had found in the discovery phase. For example, there is a spectrum in which on one side people mostly follow specific podcasts and podcasters, only looking for new episodes of their subscription, but on the other side, some people are always looking for new episodes based on the topics, guests, and quality of episodes. So, they are looking to discover new things. So, I grouped people into some personas, based on these spectrums, personalities, goals, and motivations. And by the user journey, I was able to understand at what stage in the process each problem, frustration and success in achieving goals and desires occurs. And the results made me find the best hierarchy and position of each feature that needs to be fixed or modified in the product. Using user persona and user journey together allowed me to see all aspects of users and not neglect some of them. To ensure that, as far as possible, different needs and wants are given a fair level of importance for design and accessibility. Then I mapped problems, insights, and solutions; in order to find the main features of Podex.

Ideat and Design
Based on the findings, their importance, and their situation, and considering the easy access for different needs, I started to ideate low-fidelity wireframes and arrangement of information. And you can see the final result of the ideation. Then, based on them, I made the final designs.
